Gardner has been honored with two National Magazine Award nominations, a Knight-Risser Prize for Western Environmental Journalism, and a City and Regional Magazine Award in civic journalism. She was an Ochberg Fellow with the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma in 2011, and her essay, “Walking Scar(r)ed” was listed as a notable essay of the year in The Best American Essays 2015.
